Crowding
Wouldn’t it be nice if our teeth grew perfectly straight in the first place? Unfortunately, we can’t always rely on them to do that. There may not be enough space in your mouth for all your teeth. This causes them to crowd each other and overlap. Crowding is one of the most common orthodontic problems we treat here at Straight Smiles.
Spacing
While some of us may suffer from crowding, another common problem our team sees is spacing. This is the opposite of crowding where there is too much space in your mouth for your teeth, resulting in big gaps between your teeth. Not only does this look a bit unsightly, it can also cause oral health issues, such as gingivitis (gum disease).
Overbite
Orthodontic problems aren’t just associated with the teeth. Orthodontics looks at other elements such as your jaw and your overall facial profile. An overbite is when your upper jaw sits out past your lower jaw, causing your upper teeth to sit out past your lower teeth when you take a bite. We can encourage your lower jaw to grow to align with your upper jaw and bring your teeth into alignment.
Underbite
This is the opposite to an overbite and occurs when your lower jaw and teeth jut out past your upper jaw and teeth. You can test your bite by biting on your back molars and seeing if your front teeth sit together properly. Bite problems, also known as malocclusions (bad bites) can have implications on your health as they can prevent you from chewing and digesting your food properly.
Openbite
Another common problem we see here at Straight Smiles is an openbite, where your teeth don’t close together at all. This can be easily fixed, usually with orthodontic appliances, but in some more extreme cases may require jaw surgery. That is why orthodontic treatment is recommended during the teenage years because this is when the jaw is still malleable.
